Psychodynamic Therapy

You can never forget the past unless you face up to it

Psychodynamic is the traditional form of therapy which is based on the theories of Sigmund Freud.

This type of counselling is more concerned with the past which, it is believed, all remains in our unconscious minds. This often includes dream analysis.

Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.

This is not the form of counselling I practice although there are a few techniques within it that can be useful for some people in some situations.

That is one of the advantages of practising in a pluralistic way. I can call upon a variety of ‘tools’ depending on what the client needs and wants. I will always talk through my thoughts or ideas on where we could go next with you so everything is led by you.

This post is one in a series I’ve wrtten on key counselling therapies. Other posts in the series include Person Centred, CBT and ACT. Together these make up the set of therapies I tend to use over the course of the counselling relationship.
